[General] how vowels interact with each other in a word

Hello,

Can anyone explain or refer me to a resource that explains when and how vowels interact with each other in a word.
eg the word radiator is it rAdiAtor or is it radiAtor and more importantly why?

As English is a mixture of languages, rules for stressing words can seem a bit arbitrary. In some languages, it is possible to create simple rules that work. Unfortunately, English is not one of them.
