    backside-covering exercise

What does the following in red mean?

Other times, the spending of extra money is just a backside-covering exercise by senior executives who need to be able to demonstrate that they spent lots of money, in all the traditional ways, to ensure that a product worked.

    Thank you.

    Re: backside-covering exercise

Also known as CYA, for "covering your ass" it means to take action to avoid being blamed for a failure or potential failure.

This author attempted to be more polite in his choice of words.
