What is this meaning of "quite?"

It's not a natural sentence but in that context "quite" means "just".

But it is used by this literary giant.
"I only say it is now obvious that it is quite as possible for them to appear in the future as it was for them to appear in the past."

It is still odd to my ears.

But even if it is odd, the meaning is "This movie is just as amusing as that one?" Exactly? To the very same extent?

Re: What is this meaning of "quite?"

I think of "quite" as meaning "fully," but it often used where the expectation is significantly less, so it usually ends up sounding like "moderately" or "fairly" despite its literal meaning.
