Is it grammatically correct to say that she is my friend from school days.

To mean that I have known her since we were in school.

Why not say "she has been my friend since we were in school"?

I find it grammatically questionable as I would use has been not is. Is with a time reference looking back as well as at the current situation doesn't really work for me.
