'I was born round the corner'.

People used to say, 'Go back to your country'. I used to reply, 'I was born round the corner'.

What does it mean to be born round the corner?

Nearby. This is similar to saying that the store is just around the corner - it is not too far away.

In other words "This *IS* my country. I was born very near to here."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
