There is and There are. Introduce facts and information or show location?

First, I would like to thank the people in this forum for all their help.
As far as I know the word "there" is used to introduce facts and information.
    For example:
    There are two words.
    There is one car.

But I also notice the same word "there" is used this way:
    My cellphone is there.
    The desserts are there.

I'm a bit confused. Is "there" also used for things that are not close? or to show location?

The desserts are there. The appetizers are here. (closer)
