He wanted to sleep in the ditch on the other side.

    Hi,

I don't know why the following joke is funny, though I understand each word at its face value. What's the connotation behind it? Could you explain?

Q: Why did the redneck cross the road?
A: He wanted to sleep in the ditch on the other side.

    Thank you!

It is not terribly funny. This one starts with idea that "rednecks" (often poor, uneducated white people) sleep in ditches by the side of the road (which they don't). After that, it follows an older joke format: Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.

I was also thrown by the concept of rednecks sleeping in ditches!
