What is the role of 'past' in the senetence?

    Hello Teachers,
I am so confused about the role of 'past' in the following sentence:

"A:The other day, we were walking down the street past this homeless man who asked us for money. His clothes were torn and dirty.
    B:Yeah?
A:Well, as soon as we walked past him, Terry made jokes about his clothes."

Are those 'past' adverb, verb, preposition or noun?
Please tell me the meaning of the sentence include 'past'.
and is it possible to get me refrence of 'past' meaning in these below dictionaries?
    Thanks a lot.

    Past - Definition for English-Language Learners from Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary (entry #2)
past - Definition and pronunciation | Oxford Advanced American Dictionary at OxfordLearnersDictionaries.com (#3)
past - Definition from Longman English Dictionary Online (#2)

All you have to do is type the word in the search box. Once there, as far as I can see, different options appear on either side of the screen. Click on the one you would like to check.

Additionally, it may be a good idea to bookmark this page: OneLook: General dictionary sites for more dictionaries, in case you might sometimes find the ones you are using misleading.

The word "past" is a preposition in both uses.
