    Called or Named?

    Hi guys!

What's the correct version: "What is your friend NAMED / CALLED? I can't remember!"?

    Thanks!

Usually, "What is your friend's name?"

    Re: Called or Named?

I'm so sorry... but you haven't answered my question! There's only one possibility in the sentence given, but I am having trouble in finding out the right answer. Here's one more example: Mary was named after her grandmother. NOT called
Am I being clear? Thanks a lot!

"Mary was named after her grandmother" would be the most natural.

No, in the first case there are two possible answers (What is your friend NAMED / CALLED? I can't remember!).
What is your friend named - Sally
What is your friend called - Sally

In the second case, there is only one answer (of the given example) - Mary was named after her grandmother.

You keep getting answers and you keep rejecting them. What is it that you want?

I do really want to understand why some options are possible, and others aren't... I was taught that just getting the answer is not enough.. THANKS!
