The Scottish government, headed by Salmond, has announced that Scotland will hold a referendum on independence from Britain in September 2014. Murray, who lives in the London area but was born and raised in the Scottish town of Dunblane, has not said publicly which way he would vote on the issue, and his Wimbledon Championship will only mix interest in his views.

What does "mix interest" mean in this context?

Thanks!

Jason

It's not well worded but I assume it means that before he won Wimbledon, many people in England, Ireland and Wales wouldn't have taken any interest at all in what he thought about Scottish independence. Now that he's a Wimbledon champion, for some reason people will be interested in his opinion. It might also be true that because he is Scottish but lives in London he might have a mixture of opinions. Neither of those views are well expressed by using "mix interest". I think it's a typo of some kind but I can't work out what it should have said.

I came across it from an adapted article. I find it was originally written as "will only compound interest in his view"[9/B]

Have you checked "to compound" in a dictionary? What did you find?

"Compound" can also mean to "increase". In this case it means to "increase" interest in his opinion, because he is now a hero.
