    Lightbulb University College Oxford

    University College Oxford
    University College London
    University College Dublin

What is the meaning of "university" here?
Is it an adjective? So the meaning would be "Universal College", meaning it is a college that is part of a university?
Or what does it mean? Because it seems a bit vague and unusual to me.

And why do they say University College Oxford, not University College
    of Oxford?

    Appreciate it.

It makes sense now with the comma.
But still not sure about why they call it "University College".
If it is "College of so and so University of Oxford", why did they put university before college is saying "University College"?

    Thank you.

    Re: University College Oxford

It's one of the oldest colleges, though a couple of others claim to be older, so when it started there wasn't a university like there is today. I don't know quite why they shortened their name like that, but when they started they may have been the only college in town, or operating at least in very different circumstances with just a couple of other tiny colleges around.

BTW There are names that make this one look simple. How about University College School?
