Would you check whether this short story is grammatically correct? It is very important for me.

When I was sailing across the North See (from Bergen to Lerwick) the wind was blowing east. The distance was about 200 NM and I realized that we hadn't had enough fuel (it is difficult to sail against the strong wind). I politely informed the second mate that our yacht would have run out fuel if we had continued this journey and suggested to go back until the wind had changed direction. At first he disagreed and said it would have caused a great delay but we made together calculations and it turned out that I was right. Hence, We sailed south to Stavanger and waited there two days for the better weather. Second mate was higher in rank than me and I learnt that only polite discussion could solve the problem.
