    Subject-verb agreement

Most people write " Two girls and one boy fail the test".

Is " Two girls and one boy fails the test" also correct ?

I have heard people saying the verb should agree with the subject closest to it.

Is it correct to write " I have heard people saying........"? or

I should write " I have heard people said........."

I have heard people saying the verb should agree with the subject closest to it. This is true when you have two subjects joined by an "or." It is not true when the subjects are joined with an "and."

    I have heard it said...
    I have heard people say...

Use only three dots to create your ellipsis. Do not use a random number of dots.
Do not leave a space before your punctuation marks.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Also, don't put a space after opening quotation marks.
