How do I understand the grammatical difference between these two sentences? What is the difference between saying "sleep, which promotes..." vs. "sleep, promoting..."

Information acquired during waking can be reactivated during sleep, which promotes memory stabilization.

Information acquired during waking can be reactivated during sleep, promoting memory stabilization.

They are both correct and equivalent in meaning.
