What does Read closely mean exactly?

Does it mean to read intensively or in an intensive manner, following a strict schedule in order to improve writing skills? I have looked up the dictionary but just want to make sure the precise meaning of the phrase.

    Thanks,

What is it that you are supposed to "read closely"?
