I am confused by this:

What is "broad interests"? Does it mean "broad RANGE of interests"?

So, if at a place there are a lot of different kinds of people, then could I write this:

"There were broad people at the place."

No. That would mean that the people are fat.

No. That would be a broad selection of items.

Assuming in the original example that "interest" refers to a share in some business, I don't see how "broad interests" works but "broad items" doesn't.

"Broad interests" refers to interests that span a wide scope. Items cannot do that, but the selection can.
