invite to lunch ("to"a preposition or infinitive particle)

    Hi everyone,

In the following sentence is "to" an infinitive particle or a preposition?

"Thanks for inviting me to lunch."

Can I also say "for lunch"?

    Thank you.

    Yes.

I would say that "lunch" is a noun here and "to lunch" is a prepositional phrase. "Thanks for inviting me to your home."

But one could make an argument that "to lunch" is a verb. "I invite you to go take a long walk on a short pier."

I would say it is a preposition. Yes, you could also use "for lunch".
