    mix colors

Are the following sentences natural and acceptable?

Although I tried out many new methods to mix colors, I didn’t do it well. Consequently, the work became an awful one. Nevertheless, I was satisfied with it because it was my first work of watercolor painting.

    Re: mix colors

It's okay, but not completely natural. The last one might end "... because it was my first attempt at painting with watercolors."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
