Can one use:
1-The letter was well written.

instead of:
2-The letter was written well.

1 could mean that the letter had been written well. 'Well written" could be an adjective there. But I wonder if one would not need a hyphen if the adjectival meaning was intended.

I never use sentences like 1 instead of sentences like 2.

Gratefully,
Navi.

They have the same meaning. We do not normally hyphenate adjectives when they are predicate adjectives.

Thank you very much Mike.

I am sorry, but I still do not get it!!

I think I formulated the question badly.

Can:

1-The letter was well written.

mean that the someone wrote the letter well. (the letter GOT written well)

and can one say (in spoken English):
1a-The letter got well written.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I would use "was" not "got".

"The letter got well written" is not at all natural. I might use "got" in a sentence like "Do you remember that letter that was meant to be written about six weeks ago by the Sales Manager? Well, it finally got written!"

The letter was written well.
The letter was well written.
It was a well-written letter.
