    hold on to summer

    Moving away and often down from:
    Like a true Brit, I hold on to summer until the last leaves have fallen off the trees.

    I'm not sure I understand what is meant here by "hold on to summer".
    Maybe s/he hates it when summer is over...?

    Yes, something like that. He refuses to recognize that it is fall/autumn (and stop doing summer things) until it is absolutely undeniable.
