can't get to sleep vs can't sleep

Occasionally, I can't get to sleep (succed in sleeping).

I was wondering if 'can't sleep' and ' can't go to sleep' have the same meaning as in the above sentence?

Re: can't get to sleep vs can't sleep

    I am not a teacher.

"I can't sleep" is the way I would say it.

I would say "I can't go to sleep" if I meant that I must stay awake.

"I can't get to sleep" doesn't come naturally to me.

Re: can't get to sleep vs can't sleep

I can't get to sleep these days is more natural to me than I can't go to sleep these days. Going to sleep is, for me, a natural process; getting to sleep suggests some wish or effort.

    I can't sleep
can mean very much the same thing, but I could also use those words if I woke up frequently during the night and found it hard to go back to sleeo.
