Hello,

What is a difference in using and in meaning of words: sport, sports and sporting?
Such phases as:
sport day, sports day, sporting day
or
sport symbol, sports symbol, sporting symbol.
For me it is almost the same when using sport, sports or sporting but probably I am wrong.
I'd like to know when to use them and how they differ.

One note on the use of "sport" and "sports" -
Most nouns used as modifiers are singular - shoe store, pet shop, school system.
In the US, "sports" is an exception: sports arena, sports car, etc.

Do you have sports days at schools in the US?

We did, however, have "field days."

Sometimes the events were the more familiar sports - races (on foot), etc.

But sometimes they were fun or silly events - relay races keeping an egg on a spoon, water balloon tosses, three-legged races, etc.

While usually I think of this as a primary school event, at my daughter's high school, the very last day of the school year is field day - a chance for the students and staff to have fun together. They all really look forward to it.

My daughter's elementary school would have a "super fun day" at the end of the school year.

I'd like to join that. Do I need a ticket?:-D
You can have mine. At my advanced age, the thought af a 'super fun day' is life-threatening.

That sort of event is common in Ireland. Villages hold a "Field Day" every year, usually during the summer, with all the activities you describe during the day and music and dancing in the evening.

On balance I'd sooner genuflect than bind and heel.
