    Do we need "the" before Netherlands here? (Personally, I'd use "the" here.)

    Last year, the climbers who were from the Netherlands died before they reached the peak of the Mount Everest.

    As far as I remember, "The" is a part of the oficial name of the country in English.

    Last year, the climbers who were from the Netherlands died before they reached the peak of Mount Everest.

    That sentence does not sound natural to me. I'd omit 'who were'.

    5jj do you say "the climbers", "the Netherlands" and "the Mount Everest"?
    (Why did you leave out "who were"?)

    I would not say 'the Mount Everest'. I cut and pasted, and did not notice that error, which I have now corrected. Sorry.

    I would leave out 'who were' because it is not natural in the sentence. It sounds like something from an exercise on defining and non-defining clauses. If we had already spoken of these climbers, then I might well write Last year, the climbers, who were from the Netherlands, died before they reached the peak of Mount Everest.
