    "a/an" and "the"

It is not a serious question, but have you ever thought about this?

    a. What a coincidence!

    b. What's the occasion?

Why is "a" used in sentence (a) and why is "the" used in sentence (b)?

    Re: "a/an" and "the"

There are many coincidences in life.
There is only one occasion being celebrated at this moment.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

No offense but there can be a lot of occasions, though...

    Read Barb's second sentence again.

Fine. I'll add "in this very place where you and I are."

    Re: "a/an" and "the"

Not to mention the fact that the two sentences are grammatically different.
