    I would use 'search for'.

    "He searched for something with which to work."
    "He searched for something to work with."

    Both are grammatically correct, in my opinion.

    Indeed, both are grammatically correct, but you are far more likely to hear the second one (with the "for").
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
