More and more cars are being bought

Which tense is correct after "more and more" when a sentence describes a changing or developing situation?

According to grammar books the present continuous should be used:
    1. More and more cars are being bought every year.
    2. More and more children are eating fast food.

Is the present continuous the only correct option? Is the present simple a mistake here?
    3. More and more cars are bought every year.
    4. More and more children eat fast food.

Both the continuous and the present simple are fine.
