    Sign of Exclamation

    Dear Teachers,

Normally, we use a comma after the name of the addressee as "Dear Friend,".

Can we use sign of exclamation instead of comma like "Dear Friend!"?

Please help regarding the difference between the two.

    Re: Sign of Exclamation

You could if you were in a state of excitement that you wanted to impart to the receiver of the message.
To me, most emails or letters beginning this way would be advertising or some other form of spam. Is that how you want to use it?

    Re: Sign of Exclamation

There is no reason to use an exclamation mark there. Why would you want to? What do you understand about how to use exclamation marks?

In BrE, we don't start with "Dear Friend" - we use the addressee's name if we know it or "Sir/Madam" if we don't.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

What would the exclamation mark add there? I agree with Raymott that it could make it look like advertising or spam, and I don't see that it would add anything to the text. It won't make the text more interesting or ensure that I read it more carefully.
