    Must/have to VS had

    Hello!
How do these two sentences differ with one another?
    1) John said I must/have to study hard.
    2) John said I had to study hard.

    I am not a teacher.

    1) This is acceptable to me if John said, "You have to study hard" or, "You must study hard" very recently and you are telling me what he said.

    2) Is the common way of backshifting 1) in reported speech.
