    George the Poet/My City

    Hi,
I am going to listen to this poem with one of my classes tomorrow, but I have difficutlies seeing what he actually means in this passaage:

    "Be-
Fore we hated people we were all created equal then we
Learnt to despise the strife and forgot that va-
    Riety’s the spice of life"

It is the phrase "despise the phrase" that I do not understand in this context.

    kind regards

    What does "despise" mean?
    What does "strife" mean?
