    Question A sentence I don't understand

    Hello Teacher,

I am an English learner from Japan and I have a question about a sentence.

The following sentence is from "Barron's 1100 Words You Need To Know"
"Treated with disdain by his stepfather, Artie grew closer to his natural father,"
I know all words in the sentence but I don't understand the meaning of the sentence.
Suppose "Artie" has been treated badly by his stepfather then what "grew closer to his natural father" means?
I guess "natural father" his biological father, what grow closer to his biological father?
His situation is like his parents were divorced and his mother was re-married to someone,
and his stepfather was not good to him then he visits and get closer to his biological father although
he is supposed to be with his mother that "grow closer" means?

    Thanks.

    Re: A sentence I don't understand

    Hi Tanzawa,

the phrase 'to grow close' (to someone) means to develop your relationship/friendship with someone over time. So, yes, your context fits this sentence. To help you understand it a bit better, the sentence could be paraphrased as: Because Artie's stepfather treated him badly, Artie developed a closer relationship with his own (biological/birth) father.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your English study!

    Thanks,

    Maria

It means he became (grew) emotionally more connected (closer) with his natural father.

I guess "natural father" is his biological father. Yes. What grow closer to his biological father? See above. Artie grew closer.
'Grow' means 'become' here. For example, "I'm growing tired" = "I'm becoming tired". You can also say, "I'm getting tired".
'Closer' has its usual meaning, but here it means psychologically or emotionally closer, rather than physically closer.
