    difficult sentence

    Hi
Could you let me know what this sentence is saying? it is a sympathy scale item, so no context.

    "I feel other people's pain"

Does it mean "I understand other people's ...." or "Other people's pain make me feel painful as well"?

Also, I guess pain can be replaced by "suffering" here. Right?

You could just paraphrase the item for me, then no need to respond to the questions.

    Many thanks,
    Ebi

I understand the pain that other people feel. In some cases it could mean that you actually feel the pain of other people - this usage may be seen in science fiction stories.

If it's a "sympathy scale item", I guess that means that it's one of a list of questions to work out how sympathetic you are.
I don't think simply understanding others' pain would rate highly.

    Re: difficult sentence

"I feel your pain" has become a cliche in American political campaigns.
