If that is a complete sentence, I would say only "was".

Can we say "I wanted to know whether there was anyone with the name john", can whether be followed by was or were?
... and I think it should be "John".
I wanted to ask whether we can use was with "whether", ok and how would you write or say that sentence?

Oh my God! Do you read these posts at all? Exactly as it was written except for the capital J. Use "was" not "were."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
