he sees/saw it and he hit a big shot, so I'm very happy for him.

During an NBA playoffs interview the player was asked a question about another player. And he says:

I know how it feels to not be in the spotlight and playing in the D-league and the grind of the regular season, and the opportunity came, and he sees/saw it and he hit a big shot, so I'm very happy for him.

Shouldn't it be: he saw it and he hit a big shot.

Yes, I would use the past tense "saw".

Could it have been he seized it (the opportunity)?
