    Question A sentence I don't understand2

    Dear Teachers,

Here is another sentence I don't understand, that is in "Barron's 110 words you need to know".

"Since literature reflects life, we can expect to find similar instances in which a person's ethics are compromised, and he falls prey to the pernicious evil that he had publicly denounced"

I don't understand later part "he falls prey to the pernicious evil that he had publicly denounced"
particularly what "fall prey to the pernicious evil" means?
    The evil killed him?

    Thanks!

No, "fall prey to" is metaphorical. He succumbs to evil.
