    This hat fit great!

I bought a hat for my son. And he says:

    This hat fit great!

    Shouldn't it be:

    This hat fits great!

Why are both okay to use?

They are not both okay to use. "This hat fit great" is incorrect. "This hat fits great" is better, although it would be more correct to substitute "great" with an adverb like "beautifully" or "comfortably".
I'm not a teacher of English, but I have spoken it for (almost) all of my life....

"This hat fits great" is OK. That is present tense and probably refers to the hat is wearing. If you change it to past tense, then "fit" as the past tense of "fit" is OK. But the past tense would work with "that" better than "this". "That hat fit great".
