    Passed

    Hi!

The track went up a gentle slope, and widened out into an open space with a wall of thick undergrowth around it, and then, narrowing again, passed on into the distance and the faint blue mist of summer heat. And into this pleasant summer glade Rachel passed a girl, and left it, who shall say what? I did not stay long there.
(Arthur Machen: The Great God Pan)

And into this pleasant summer glade Rachel passed a girl, and left it, who shall say what?
What does "passed" mean in this sentence?

    Thanks

    Re: Passed

"Walked past a girl" would be my immediate answer. On second reading, though, it seems to me that it means "Rachel entered the summer glade being a girl, and left it in another form/shape" (we do not know, hence the question "who shall say what?" meaning "Who can tell what she had become?").
Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor a teacher.

    Re: Passed

When I first read this, my thought was that she became a woman. But the "who shall say what" is very strange.

Arthur Machen was a writer of supernatural and fantasy fiction. This link is about the book from which the sentence comes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_God_Pan

    Re: Passed

She spends all her days in the woods, scares a boy so much he is hospitalized, and leads to the rape of her best friend Rachel.

This is from Wikipedia. Rachel was raped?
