Question What is the role of 'present' in the following sentence?

    Hello Teachers,
I don't know in the following context, present is verb or noun .

One commonly pasteurized product is milk. By decreasing the
amount of dangerous bacteria present, milk can be made safer to consume.

    Thanks.

    I am not a teacher.

It is an adjective. It means,
"By decreasing the amount of dangerous bacteria that are there.."

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

You mean : 3 : to give or bestow formally
That doesn't make sense at all .

Re: What is the role of 'present' in the following sentence?

    No. She means:

    3pres·ent

adjective\ˈpre-zənt\: not past or future : existing or happening now
—used to say what someone or something is now
: at the particular place or event that is being referred to

Just scroll down the page to find that.
Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor a teacher.

Re: What is the role of 'present' in the following sentence?

If present is an adjective so You mean the sentence is something like that :
One commonly pasteurized product is milk. By decreasing the amount of dangerous bacteria that is present, milk can be made saferto consume. It also lasts longer after it’s been pasteurized ....

Re: What is the role of 'present' in the following sentence?

(neither a teacher nor a native English speaker)

It seems Barb meant another "3" there - the one which is an adjective.
Also, you may look it up on http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionarie...lish/present_1. Definition #3 again.
