    Peter did not talk

Please would you correct my mistakes in the following sentences. I am not sure if these constructions are correct.

    1. Peter did not talk to his neighbours except for the old widow, who shared the fence with him.
    2. Peter did not talk to his neighbours with the exception of the old widow, who shared the fence with him.

    Re: Peter did not talk

They seem fine to me. I'm not sure I like "who shared a fence with him" but I don't have a better solution.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Peter did not talk

Unless the listener already knows who the "old widow" refers to, I would not use a comma in either sentence. The relative clause appears to define the "old widow".
