    Re: Pronunciation for Diaoyu Islands

I am not trying to make a political statement but Diaoyu has been occurring frequently in English language coverage of current events and I would simple like to get the correct pronunciation. Please explain what is political about that?

Thanks for the video. From the video, I am hearing /ˈdaʊˈjəʊ/.

But if anyone has something more authoritative it would be greatly appreciated.

I did not ask for the pronunciation of Senkaku because its pronunciation is readily available in many standard pronunciation references.

Re: Pronunciation for Diaoyu Islands - Revisited

Using the Chinese for Diaoyu (钓鱼), which I believe means Fishing and the Google Translate pronunciation of 钓鱼, I approximated the Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciation of Diaoyu as /dɪˈaʊ.i.jiː/ which is radically different from the video pronunciation of /ˈdaʊˈjəʊ/ approximated from the posted video above.

Re: Pronunciation for Diaoyu Islands - Revisited

    Hello PHenry1026,

I’m just a learner and I know little about Chinese language, but according to my Chinese-Japanese dictionary, “Diaoyu” seems to be pronounced as /dio y/ in Pinyin and, I believe, [tiɑʊ y] (sorry, I’m ignoring the tone diacritics) in IPA (by the way, Chinese /t/ and /d/ are realized as aspirated [tʰ] and unaspirated [t] respectively).
It must be quite tricky for native English speakers to pronounce [tiɑʊ y] correctly, because in English, /t/ is aspirated like [tʰ] in stressed syllable-initial position, and there is no triphthong [iɑʊ] or high front rounded vowel [y] ([i] with lip-rounding) in English phonemes.
So I don’t think there is a “correct” pronunciation of “Diaoyu” in English in the first place.
I’ve heard a CNN reporter say [daʊ ju] and a narrator of the audio version of The Economist say [di aʊ ju], but both of them are far from [tiɑʊ y].

Thanks a lot for your thoughtful response: With the great advances with text to speech we can now test any set of phonemes.

When you get a chance please go to the following web site:

    http://www.ivona.com/us/

Choose one of the English voices (I recommend Joey) and enter the following:

    <phoneme alphabet="ipa" ph="tiɑʊ y"></phoneme>

    then press Play.

Is /tiɑʊ y/ close to what you expected it to sound like?

    Hello,

I tried that Text-to-Speech, but it doesn’t seem to work properly. It pronounces [y] and [u] the same...
I think the pronunciation you can hear in the following website is closer to [tiɑʊ y] (or [tiaʊ yː]?).
