    extended the process of democratization

    Dear all,

The following pasage is a part of an article titled "The library in the New Age".

...Pamphlets and newspapers, printed by steam-driven presses on paper made from wood pulp rather than rags, extended the process of democratization so that a mass reading public came into existence during the second half of the nineteenth century...

What does "extended the process of democratization" mean? Does it mean pamphlets and newspapers fascilitated the process of starting a system of government by voting?

    Thank you!

It made reading more democratic as texts were available at a lower cost to more people. Before this, books had been very expensive and only available to an elite.

Hi Tdol, thank you for your reply.

May I ask you one more thing? Does the word "texts" in your reply mean "reading material" generally?

I assume so- this paper made it possible to print pamphlets and newspapers, so costs must have come down.
