What is it? = What's the matter?

    Hi,

Does "what is it?" mean "what's the matter" or "what's up" in the following context, which is from House of Cards, American TV drama?

A journalist AAA was busy with typing some files via computer, and took a glimpse at Zoe, when she came over.

    AAA: What is it?

Zoe: Um, I knew you're gonna have your hands full at the White House. If you need someone to do research, or punch out background.

AAA: I think I'll be fine.

Zoe:Well, if things get hectic, and you need any help

    Thank you!

Yes, "what is it" is another way to say "what's the matter." ;)

I don't think that this context works for understanding "what's the matter?" from this.

"AAA" is working and "Zoe" comes over near him/her. So he says "What is it?" meaning "what do you want?/Why are you bothering me?/why did you walk over to where I am working?"

What does "what's the matter" mean?

What's the matter = what can I do for you?

what's the matter = What happens?

No, "what's the matter?" = "What is wrong?"/"What is bothering you?"
