    The word gets out

At the party, Paul asks Holly (the host):
    - This is some party. Who are all these people, anyhow?
    - Who knows? The word gets out. You don't mind, do you, darling?
    Breakfast at Tiffany's, movie

Does she mean -- all who heard that Holly is throwing a party came. Or, literally, the word about the party got out and the people came. Is this right?
    Thanks.

    Re: The word gets out

The phrase "the word got out" usually refers to something that was supposedly secret but then was exposed to the public.
