Should I use kills or killed?

Should I use kills or killed?

I have finished reading a story called “Dangerous Game”. It is about a man who kills/killed his wife because he doesn’t want to lose her.

I think I should use “killed” in the sentence because it is talking about a story.

Not a teacher nor a native speaker.

As far as I know, when we're talking about a story, we use the present simple.
Moreover, in your sentence you used "who killed" (the past simple) and "he doesn't (the present simple). Native speakers don't like such sentences.
I'm not saying you can't use the past simple. Both are correct.

It was about a man who killed his wife because he didn't want to lose her.

    or

It is about a man who kills his wife because he doesn’t want to lose her.
Please, correct all my mistakes. I should know English perfectly and if you show me my mistakes I will achieve my dream a little bit faster. A lot of thanks.
