I am otherwise on my own

    Hi,

An American told me that he returned to China for work. The following is a snippet of his email. I had thought he was in the states and asked him whether or not he could help another friend of mine to buy a photo from there.

My wife will join me here for June and July, but I am otherwise on my own.
What does "otherwise on my own" mean?

Does it mean if his wife doesn't come to China, and he will have to live alone here?

    Thank you!

Re: I am otherwise on my own

His wife will join him for those two months. In all other ways, he is alone.
If his wife were not coming he would be completely alone.

His wife is going to be with him for those two months but at all other times, he will be on his own. I'm sure he won't actually physically be alone - he probably works with other people but he will presumably be living alone when his wife isn't there.
