    need

Hi everyone. I'd appreciate your replies.
    which one is more acceptable?
He needs the menu TO order.
He needs the menu FOR ordering.
I feel the first might be ok but it can also be ambiguous like "I need him to come with me"

    Re: need

It would be more common to say He needs the menu to order. It's true that it can be ambiguous, but actually a native speaker would overcome that ambiguity through intonation.

If you were talking about a menu that had the capability to make an order, and he needed that menu to do his ordering for him, you would emphasise the word menu. (He needs the menu to order.)

If you were talking about a guy who needs to receive a menu so that he can order his meal (which I assume is what you mean), then you would emphasise the word order. (He needs the menu to order.)

It's not a heavy emphasis in either case, just a slight one. :)

    Re: need

    Thanks for the reply.
I was also wondering if this "reasoning" is viable:
I need him to clean the tables. ( it's an immediate demand like a mother asking her child to do the cleaning, maybe now or today or tomorrow).
    and
I need him for cleaning the tables. ( like when one has hired a busboy to do the cleaning as a job)
    Thanks again

    Re: need

Possibly, but without the context to make the meaning clear, the second would just sound a bit odd to me.
