    half as good as

Ryan Giggs called today a new chapter that fans will hope is just half as good as the old one.

Can any native help me to paraphrase the underlined sentence?

    Thanks!

    Jason

    Re: half as good as

It makes no sense at all to me. To paraphrase:

Ryan Giggs declared that today marks the beginning of a new chapter. Fans will hope it is just half as good as the old one.

Why on earth would fans hope that? Enemies and rivals might hope that, but fans would certainly hope that this new chapter will be as good as or better than the last. There may perhaps be some satirical or sarcastic meaning, but I don't know enough about football or Ryan Giggs to figure it out.

    Re: half as good as

Ryan Giggs will be assistant coach to Louis Van Gaal, the new team coach. Therefore, IMO, it does make sense that Manchester United fans hope Mr. Giggs to be at least half as good at it as he was as a player.

    Re: half as good as

If the old chapter was spectacular, completely out-of-this-world good, it may be reasonable to be content with a future that is only half as good as the past.

If his "half-as-good" is better than other players "100% good" then fans can still be happy.

    Re: half as good as

Yes, but as a hope it seems to be a bit defeatist.
