Flash as a verb used in an IT context -- BR English? Or an error?

Dear British and Commonwealth colleagues, a friend in San Fran who runs a small consulting business asked my opinion on translating the French verb "flasher" (to scan a QR code on a smart phone) as "to flash" for a UK audience. I said I doubted that word could be used on the north side of the channel.

Was I right in saying so?

    Many thanks

    Kon

    I am not a teacher.

I agree. Scan sounds more appropriate.

I live on the south side of the channel so I hear "flasher" all the time, but in English that word means an exhibitionist.

I haven't heard flash used in that way in BrE.

You've never heard of a flasher? Usually caricatured as someone in a dirty raincoat hanging around school playgrounds.
