    Smile lack or shortage?

    hello there!
first of all thank you for answering my previous question secondly, i'd like to tell you that i found your site really helpful.excellent work! and finally, my question:

    in the sentence:
He was put off the competition because of a ______ of height.
    a. lack
    b. shortage

which is correct and why? what is the exact difference between the two?

    thank you in advance!!!

    Re: lack or shortage?

Lack means absence, and there's no such thing as an absence of height... there's always height, no matter how small (confusing, right?)

Shortage means insufficency. So he was high, just not high enough.

Therefore, you should go with shortage

    Talking Re: lack or shortage?

    dear HCaulfield

sorry to say that. but i've just heard LACK in such situations.

there is lack of s.th, but not shortage of that thing.

in my opinion, lack is better to use.

    hope that helps

    Re: lack or shortage?

In that example, it would be 'lack', but it's not a very natural sentence- 'because he wasn't tall enough' or something would be better.
