    Sequence of tenses.

    Which one of the following sentences is correct according to English grammatical rules and meaning?

    # He thinks that they were students.
    or
    # He thinks that they are students.

    Both are grammatically correct.

    As I have read from the books that "subordinate clause" should be in the same tense in which "main clause" is.
    like :
    He thinks that they are students.

    Please explain?

    What if they are no longer students? They once were, but are not students now. Then it is perfectly fine to say that "they were students." He thinks that they were students.

    Both of your sentences are grammatically correct. They have different meanings.

    That is not a rule and it isn't true in practice.
