    with its growing population?

    Hello, teachers!

    Would you read the following?

On another front in this war, if the sea level rises by 1 meter during this century, which is now clearly a possibility, Bangladesh will lose half of its rice land, and scores of other Asian countries will lose their rice-growing river deltas. Modern civilization, with its growing population, is being squeezed into an even smaller area by expanding deserts and rising seas.

Which of the following does this "with its growing population" mean in this case?

    1. as its population is growing

    2. although its population is growing

Thank you very much in advance for your help on this.
